Strong business presentation skills is one of the key attributes looked for when recruiting new staff.
Some develop their presentation skills over a number of years as a result of giving business presentations and using the feedback from other people and of course learning from their own experiences.
In reality however, you can build up good presentation skills more quickly if you attend good presentation skills training from an experienced trainer.
You can also progress by reading presentation skills tips and advice on the web and in books. And here are some initial tips to help you start to build up your presentation technique.
When first starting to create a presentation don’t jump immediately to PowerPoint. You should wait until you’ve finished the initial draft before doing that.
Analyse your audience - and why they should support what you’ve got to say. Make sure that you remember that the outcome will largely be as a result of how the audience react to the presentation the audience react tofavourably.
Therefore it’s important to think about who your audience will be and what experience they have of your presentation topic. Then when you come to create the presentation you can use your expertise to ensure that what you say is very relevant to them.
Next you need to ensure that you are clear on just what you personally want to achieve from your presentation. Are you demonstrating something? Are you trying to pass on some important information? Do you need to receive acceptance from them for your project? Whatever it is just, simply make sure that you are clear about them before you start working on the text of your presentation.
Then with the above factors in mind try and produce a business presentation that will be understood by the audience and addresses the objectives you want to achieve too. You should try and use the power of 3 in the business presentation structure. It’s a simple but also a very effective structure ? so try a Beginning; Middle; End. Break the middle section up into three smaller sections. One section for each of the key points you want to get across.

Now that you have the main text of your presentation finished it is time to think about slides. Don’t fall into the trap of using PowerPoint as a personal memory aid. The slides are there for your audience. Ensure you make the slides you produce as visual as possible. Your visuals are there to support your presentation, they are not the presentation themselves. You might also try to ensure that you keep the number of visuals to a minimum.
And finally, when you come to actually give the presentation, don’t try not to read off the powerpoints, its much better to face the audience when you are speaking to them. And try to enjoy the experience yourself.
